1960, Summertime in the Shuswap/Okanagan - Shuswap Lake, Vernon, Kelowna, Penticton BC

It's the spring and summer of 1960 and if you are a child living in the Okanagan, life is pretty wonderful. From swimming at Shuswap Lake and watching the CP Rail passenger train snake it's way along the shoreline to Toronto and Montreal to playing on the soft sandy beach at Skaha Lake and watching a Canadian Pacific Airlines Convair make it's noisy approach to Penticton Airport. Kiddie rides and ferris wheels at amusement parks, eating cotton candy amid the joyful music and happy families.

Sitting on the sidewalk and watching the colorful Kelowna Regatta and Vernon May Day parades, so many colourful floats and fancy costumes. The parades always featured several marching bands, bugle bands and even the bagpipes. Decorating your bicycle or tricycle with bunting and crepe paper and being lucky enough to participate in that parade alongside your friends was a great moment.

The proud feeling of catching a fish at the children's fishing derby in Polson Park or watching the mesmerizing choreography of the Maypole dance from the wooden grandstand with a thousand spectators. The Kelowna Regatta featured daring high diving demonstrations at the Athans tower at the Aquatic Centre at dusk. Or maybe spending a Saturday afternoon with your father at the BC Power Commission yard and climbing around his bright red work truck. We were proud of our parents. Yes, growing up and living in the Okanagan is pretty wonderful. These are the memories we cherish.
