Your future performance concept:
"As you might have picked up from the title "The anglerfish that lost its light", this piece is about an anglerfish that lost its light :)) Anglerfish is an umbrella term for a whole range of races. I would go more specifically for the black sea devil species (for reference this is what they look like: Mindenpictures.com). So, this fish has an antenna-like stick coming from its head with a natural light attached to it. The purpose of this light is actually not to illuminate its surrounding, but to attract prey. So, an anglerfish that lost his light means that it cannot eat anymore and it gets really hangry. On top it has this mouth full of sharp teeth, and it generally looks very angry. So, what does it has to do with my juggling piece? So, in general, all these background info about the angler fish inspired me for the character of the act. It's a very angry character with a very animalesque way of moving with weird ways to catch and handle the clubs. Its characteristic mouth inspired me to do the research with the mouth. How is the light part of the concept? So, already in the plot of the act the light plays an essential role, because it represents the light that an anglerfish has naturally. And then I was also thinking of playing with the fact that it would be quite dark and the light makes stuff visible. So, for example, in the beginning when my head is resting on the club it would give light to my face and the character would shine through that. It would also bring focus to the weird catches, like the knee catches and the mouth ones.
More thoughts around the plot, where the programming of the light could come in handy and how the plot would change when there are the clubs: I thought of building a little construction that would imitate this antenna like stick of the anglerfish. The construction would hold on to the club in the position over my head. (Drive.google.com). The character would enter the stage in its "neutral" angler fish way but then its light would start to flicker and malfunction which would make it nervous, sensitive and therefor angry. The character tries to fix it, but it doesn't work. So, it starts playing with it and it uses the other clubs to check if they work. That is how it ends up "juggling". Throughout the act it would become more and more (h)angry. Therefore, the putting it in the mouth and the sounds that accumulate. As the lights are programmable, I would like to play with the fact that maybe at some moments the lights do work and don't flicker anymore and its hopes get up and he gets really happy, but then they start flicker again and it curses in its gibberish language. And eventually it slows down because nothing worked and dies of exhaustion. (I could also find a more optimistic ending: It does find a way to make them work and full of exaggerated enthusiasm it "runs" of stage :) ). Thank you for reading this long concept :)"
Other notes on future performance ideas
"Location: Dream location would be in a cave, with minimal light (maybe in the evening/night). I think that would fit the setting and the plot. I would have some potential locations in mind (Img.oastatic.com this is in a forest in Luxembourg, where there is a lot of these caves and tunnels). However, I think it would also work good a normal stage. For the costume I think it would be interesting to go in the direction of the anglerfish itself. So, like brown/copper costume with a lot of little details, like fins and stripes (some could be in reflective material), because with the light one can direct the focus to these details. Music: As making sounds and talking gibberish is part of the character, I think the music should be more like a supporting medium. I imagine a deep-sea soundscape, like whale sounds/clicking. When the anger of the character gets bigger, the soundscape would also become more dense and maybe there would be even some more atmospherical music come in. Even if I see it more as a supportive thing, I think it would be still interesting to synchronize it with the clubs. Like I imagine that there is a sound that frightens the character, but it is also reflected in the clubs that flicker stronger and could have some colour shifts. I would see the audience sitting in a circle and I start outside, and I would enter the circle. This would enable me to go closer to them and immerse them more in my world."
