Police and pro-Palestinian protesters clashed in Madrid on Thursday (October 2) as tensions escalated during a demonstration against Israel's interception and detention of members of an aid flotilla bound for Gaza.

The protest, which began with thousands marching through the city, turned violent toward its conclusion when police moved to disperse demonstrators. Officers fired tear gas and pushed protesters.

Reuters footage captured the detention of at least one demonstrator, though local authorities have not yet provided details on the number of arrests made during the unrest.

Israel faced international condemnation after armed Israeli soldiers boarded around 40 ships from the Global Sumud Flotilla that were attempting to break a naval blockade to deliver aid to the Palestinian enclave, arresting more than 400 foreign activists including Swedish climate campaigner Greta Thunberg.

Across Europe, thousands of protesters took to the streets in Dublin, Paris, Berlin and Geneva to condemn Israel's interception of the flotilla. Rallies also took place in Buenos Aires, Mexico City and Karachi.
