The famous controversy between Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad of Qadian and Peer Mehar Ali Shah of Golra has been widely discussed for more than a century. Critics often repeat the claim that Mirza Ghulam Ahmad issued a challenge but did not appear to face his opponent.
However, a careful examination of primary historical records paints a very different picture.
In this program we revisit the events of 1900, when Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad publicly invited Peer Mehar Ali Shah to a scholarly contest: to produce a Qur’anic commentary of Surah Al-Fatiha in eloquent Arabic.
This challenge was announced after the publication of Anjām-e-Ātham, in which Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad declared that he would no longer participate in conventional public debates but would instead rely on spiritual and scholarly signs as evidence of divine support.
The video carefully traces the historical sequence of events:
• The early admiration expressed by some scholars for Mirza Ghulam Ahmad’s defense of Islam against Christian missionaries and Arya Samaj polemicists
• The publication of the book Shams-ul-Hidāyah attributed to Peer Mehar Ali Shah
• Responses by scholars such as Syed Muhammad Ahsan Amrohi
• The July 1900 advertisement inviting Peer Mehar Ali Shah to a face-to-face Arabic Tafsir challenge
• The conditions proposed by Peer Mehar Ali Shah that included a preliminary verbal debate
• The events in Lahore in August 1900, including correspondence and attempts to finalize the challenge
• The later announcement in Arba‘een setting a 70-day period to produce the commentary
• The publication of the Arabic work I‘jāz-ul-Masīḥ (Miracle of the Messiah) on 23 February 1901
The program also examines later claims that the book Saif-e-Chishtia was written as a response to this challenge and analyzes the historical evidence surrounding that claim.
By presenting references from contemporary sources such as Al-Hakam, Majmū‘a Ishtihārāt, Mehr-e-Munīr, and the writings of Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, this video provides a detailed historical overview of the dispute.
