In this video, Tim Warner covers directly connecting two different systems. Historically, there have been a number of solutions for connecting two PCs together, and the current best practice for transferring files from one PC to the other is a natural progression from them.

Maybe you have a colleague, a friend, or a family member who has brought their computer to you so that you can wipe the hard drive, fix any issues on it, then return the files.

Obviously you'll want to backup the data before performing that wipe. This is a pretty old problem, and there have been different attempts at solving it.

The Direct Cable Connection that was built into Windows 95 was a noble effort, but in practice, using the null modem cable to create a direct connection between the two systems was inefficient and cludgy.

Windows Easy Transfer system appeared in Windows XP, Vista and 7. It made use of a proprietary transfer cable developed with a double-headed USB cable. It enabled transfer with no TCP/IP addressing concerns.

For contemporary transfer solutions, a wireless networking solution is your best bet, but using an ethernet crossover cable between two devices can work in a pinch as well.
