"Coral relocation" is a business term used by corporations that attempt to hide and greenwash ecological destruction and damage. This is a common practice in the Maldives today, as global transnational companies partner with state institutions and resort developers to create narratives to mislead and confuse the public to carry out so-called reclamation work, that permanently destroys established natural reef ecosystems and
biodiversity on which communities depend.

The case of extensive reclamation in Addu City by the Dutch company Van Oord is no different to many other similar projects that permanently and irreparably damages and destroys coral reefs that are integral to community and island resilience. The coral reef ecosystems are the natural defences of islands in the Maldives. Destroying them is to expose communities to increased risks of climate related hazards, as well as to undermine the economic resilience of communities. The practice of "coral relocation" is a side-show of reclamation projects and such activities are impractical, unsustainable, unsuccessful and not scientifically viable in practice.

In this short clip, Fathun from Veshisaafu NGO explains how "coral relocation" greenwashing was done by the Netherlands corporation involved in dredging and reclaiming the reefs of Addu City in 2023. Coral relocation is nothing but "a picture they painted" for the local people, as if these companies believe that the local folks are stupid.
