Digital Crime Lab at DSU growing world renown for chip-off forensics
ST. GEORGE, Utah- + Video – (Dixie State University) What started out as a grant funded academic and law enforcement support program has blossomed into a world renown chip-off forensics lab. Dixie State University’s Computer Crime Institute has branched out in solving thousands of cases over the past six years, while at the same time teaching students how to do it. The unique partnership through DSU’s Criminal Justice Program has grown so much that the newly hired Director, Mark Spooner, wants to see the program expand.
Law enforcement in Utah use the lab to analyze data from cell phones, laptops and other digital devices taken from crime scenes. What might take other crime labs 18 months to retrieve, takes only about 2-3 weeks in St. George. Housed at DSU, the lab has become an instrumental teaching platform for students as well as law enforcement learning how to hack the devices for evidence.
