In this video, I install my new MacBook Pro SSD upgrade kit from OWC. I got tired of seeing the spinning beach balls when trying to edit my podcast on my laptop from 2012. Plus Dropbox was filling up all my hard drive space! So I knew I needed a new solution.

Just when I thought I might need to get a whole new computer I learned about the SSD upgrade kit from OWC (chatting with the founder Larry O'Connor at NAMM) which lets me swap out my internal spinning drive for a super fast SSD.

I am able to remove my unused optical drive (who uses Cds and DVDs anymore??) and install a new SSD in the second slot to house my Dropbox folder! So rather than have to spend thousands on a new computer I was simply able to upgrade my trusty existing mac and keep all the useful ports.

By switching to a pair of SSDs and no longer having any moving parts in my computer I get the added benefit of increased battery life too. So now my MacBook Pro will be able to operate for hours without being plugged into the wall. Super cool!

The upgrade kit includes:
-Mercury Extreme Pro 6G 2T SSD for the new system drive
-Mercury Electra 3G 2T SSD to replace the optical drive slot
-Data Doubler SSD tray drive caddy for the optical slot
-OWC Express 2.5" Portable USB 3.0 Enclosure for SATA NoteBook HDs

Note from Lij: When you go to install the OSX on the new system SSD it may offer Lion as your operating system. Then you may see Mountain Lion as an upgrade option in the app store next.

After that you can use the link below to go get the El Capitan installer, and then follow the instructions for High Sierra and Mahave.

And here is what OWC says about upgrading to the latest Mac OS from Lion (thanks Evan M! He helped through the OWC live chat support):

"You would generally download and update to 10.11 El Capitan first and then you go update to any newer Mac OS of your choosing up to Mojave currently.

How to install High Sierra: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208969

And you can click Get Mac OS High Sierra and it should take you to the App Store with this link here https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/macos...

INSTALLING DROPBOX:
Also, here is a tip for putting Dropbox back onto your new Mercury Electra 3G SSD once its installed in the optical drive bay with the Data Doubler:

You will need to go into Dropbox settings and direct Dropbox to the new drive as a place to store all your files. If you are starting fresh with all new SSDs then you won't have any of your Dropbox files on the computer yet, and Dropbox will begin downloading all your existing files from the internet into the new Dropbox folder.

This is fine if you only have a small amount of Dropbox files in your folder, but if you have a lot like I do (nearly 1T) then you want to avoid re-downloading everything. So the trick is to pause Dropbox syncing (using the gear icon) once it creates your new Dropbox folder on the optical bay SSD, then copy all your existing files from your old hard drive over to the new Dropbox folder, and resume the Dropbox syncing.

This way Dropbox will see that you already have all the needed files in your Dropbox folder and will skip downloading them. Dropbox will, however, need to re-index all those files to check them against what is already in the cloud.

So Dropbox will say that it is processing thousands of files (but don't worry it won't be downloading all those files and won't use up your internet data). Simply give it a few hours and Dropbox will fully sync itself with your new drive and Dropbox folder and you will be ready to rock!

Cheers,
Lij
