(4 Jun 2021) Walid Assaf, the Chairman of the Colonization and Wall Resistance Commission in the Palestinian Authority said on Friday that the new Israeli government will not change the situation of the Palestinians, but will instead make their conditions worse.
"What Netanyahu did not do in terms of demolishing, destroying, evacuating the Palestinians, ethnic cleansing, and annexing the Jordan Valley and Area C, this new government will do more," he said in an interview with The Associated Press.
Yair Lapid and his main coalition partner, Naftali Bennett, declared Thursday that they had reached a deal to form a new government and muster a majority in the 120-member Knesset, or parliament.
The coalition consists of eight parties from across the political spectrum with little in common except the shared goal of toppling Netanyahu after his record-setting 12 years in power.
The alliance includes hard-liners previously allied with Netanyahu, as well as center-left parties and even an Arab faction - a first in Israeli politics.
"I think the participation in this government, is a miserable and bad participation that will affect our national rights and our existence, and it will affect the existence of the Palestinians inside Israel," Assaf told AP.
But the fragile coalition still faces a tough road ahead - it was not able to unseat the parliament speaker, a Netanyahu ally, and later on Thursday and it remained unclear how events would play out over the next few days.
