Definition: System of transferring case which are beyond the technical competency of one infrastructure to higher infrastructure having technical competency and all other resource to provide desired health services.
Referral system is vertical in nature, cases are transfer from village health post to sub centre and PHC. From PHC to CHC and from CHC to multi specialty hospital. The health care services are planned and organise this way to be cost effective and useful.
LEVELS OF HEALTH CARE
There are 3 levels of health care organisation
Primary Level Health care: It is the first level of contact between community and care provider. Here the problems are solved by the guidance of the health teams.
Secondary Level Health care: It is called First Referral Unit (FRU).
In this infrastructure preventive services like diagnostic, curative, specialised consultation is provided. The infrastructure includes CHC and Sub district Hospital.
Tertiary Level Health care: Care provided by the medical colleges, specialised hospital and super specialised hospital.

SELECTION OF REFERRAL CASES
Patients are grouped into 3Categories
Category 1 It means patients with Fatal condition. Life cannot save even with treatment.
Category 2It means serious conditions. Life can be saved but only with immediate treatment
Category 3 It means minor condition. Life cannot be threatened if referral is delayed

PURPOSES OF REFERRAL SYSTEM
To provide need based comprehensive care.
To seek expert opinion regarding patient
To seek admission facility and better management of patients
To prevent overcrowding in medical colleges and super special hospitals
