Twitter’s decision to fact check a Tweet by President Trump on mail-in ballots has sparked controversy regarding the supposed regulation of free speech on online platforms which Sky News host Gary Hardgrave says is “extraordinary and very scary”.

Donald Trump has threatened to “strongly regulate or close down” social media platforms after Twitter placed a warning label below one of the president’s tweets concerning mail-in balloting.

Twitter subsequently defended their warning label, saying “these Tweets contain potentially misleading information about voting processes and have been labelled to provide additional context around mail-in ballots”.

Mr Hardgrave pointed out while Twitter is a “platform and not a publisher,” their recent actions have seen the company take on an editorial role.

LNP MP Jon Krause said Twitter was “an echo chamber for the Left” which was “unreflective of the mainstream opinion in Australia” and was best “turned off”.
