On Wednesday 13th September 2023, the first Vintage Rail Journeys tour of the 2023-24 season made its way through Central West NSW, that train being 8L12 “Golden West Rail Tour”, formed of the "Aurora Australis" restored Southern Aurora consist hauled by 4702, 4464 and the immaculately PTC Reverse-liveried 42107.
In this film, we follow the train from Newbridge to Rydal as it makes its way from Orange to Wallerawang (and ultimately Rylstone), with some locomotive remarshalling during a stop at Bathurst and an appearance from the “Central West XPT” at Georges Plains. These were my first shots of 42107 nose-leading (after facing the coaches for the entirety of • 158F: 5917 To Rylstone - 500th Video! (Wil... ) and it almost single-handedly changed my opinion on Public Transport Commission (PTC) Reverse livery; I wasn’t a fan of it before, but I am now!

I seem to be doing a lot of chases lately (more on that in a bit), but when 42107 came through my neck of the woods at the head of the “Golden West Rail Tour”, that is the perfect chase subject, especially as I had only seen the locomotive once before and it had its nose to the coaches on that occasion. As I said before, this locomotive nearly single-handedly changed my opinion on PTC Reverse livery (623/723 which appears in • 158F: Thornleigh In The Thirties (28/10/21) also helped). The Vintage Rail Journeys tours are always fun sights but having 42107 on this one made it even more fun. I also, finally, nailed that wide shot at Newbridge, producing one of my favourite shots of the year.
Now for something on a bit of a different note.
I have decided that this film will be the last episode of Wild West Chases for the foreseeable future. Whilst this film is certainly a nice one, “chasing” trains for me (specifically getting the train then beating it to another spot, rinse and repeat 3-10 times) has become tiring for me, especially given the number I’ve done recently. The final films are always fun, but filming them too often takes a lot out of me. It's as a result of this and one other reason that I won't go into in this space that I'm putting the brakes on Wild West Chases (and train "chases" in general).
In a similar vein, I have several films nearly ready for release coming soon, mostly Bathurst Volumes, but after these you might see a few less to let me focus on other things (namely university, work and health).
Is this the last production I’ll record? Absolutely not. Is it the last episode of Wild West Chases? Also, probably not. However, I do need to focus more on things outside of railways going forward.
With that said…
I have three more Bathurst Volumes ready for upload over the coming weeks; these will be out every Saturday until I run out of films. I intend on making one more Bathurst Volume this year and eight more next year, which will take the series to its finale at fifty entries. As for Wild West Chases, which was never intended to be a series in the first place, there might be another couple of episodes in it but they wouldn't be coming along until next year and it would have to be something REALLY good for me to go chasing again. If this is the end, I certainly went out on a high note!
