lead in: a bomb, apparently aimed at disrupting a right- wing march, exploded in downtown lisbon thursday (1/12), injuring one man.

the blast occured only minutes before the main body of the march reached the site of the explosion, on the city's main boulevard. it was the second time in a week that explosions have disrupted right-wing marches in portugal.

the rightists had scheduled the march as a show of strength, as portugal faces the worst political crisis in the history of its young democracy.

commentary: the crisis came after the minority socialist government of premier adolfo soares threatened to resign unless opposition parties on both the right and left gave the cabinet their blanket support.

although soares' government survived a vote of confident this week, right wing demonstrations against the government have sprung up, and speculation is that this bomb explosion was part of a left-wing reaction to these demonstrations.

the only person injured happened to be standing over a manhole, under which the bomb had been hidden. he was not critically injured.

the marchers seemed to be convinced about the origin of the bomb...they marched on the nearby headquarters of the communist party. riot police moved in to stop the attack on the headquarters. the police, wielding clubs, drove off the rightists. thousands of other marchers ignored the blast, and continued their procession, chanting, "down with ideological oppression" and other anti-leftist and anti- government slogans.
