Mr. Lokesh Ohri describes The Himalayas are as water towers, fundamental to human survival. Communities living here have been the custodians of this landscape over centuries. Increased construction activity through mega road and rail projects and dams is now threatening the landscape and tearing apart the fabric of community life. In this talk, he delves into the reasons for this change and suggests a shift in the way we think about the Himalayas, to save humanity from a major catastrophe. An Anthropologist, activist, author and filmmaker, Lokesh Ohri has actively worked on social and ecological issues in the Himalayas for the last three decades. The Mahatma Gandhi Award was recently conferred upon him for working on Gandhian Values in the Himalayas. He has authored a number of books and research studies, the most recent being a two-volume study on the Ganga, commissioned by the National Mission for Clean Ganga, titled Ganga Katha, Samagrata and Samakshata This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
