Kaniwhaniwha: The majestic Kahikatea tree is nestled within the Pirongia Forest Park in the Waikato region.

I began this hike early on a Sunday morning, arriving at the Kaniwhaniwha Reserve car park shortly after 8am. The weather had been clear all week, so I wasn’t expecting much mud, but there was still a significant amount. The bush becomes much denser and muddier after the caves. I would not recommend hiking this trail during or after heavy rain. If you plan to explore the caves, bring a torch as they are very dark and narrow.

The hike to the Kahikatea tree took me just over 4 hours, including time spent filming. On my way back, I didn’t encounter anyone until I passed the caves again. The trail was very solitary, but it offered a peaceful and beautiful experience. The return journey to the car park took just over 2 hours, as I didn’t film on the way back.
