He watched them die — and couldn’t forget. This is the story of Henry Dunant, the man who turned horror into hope.
When Henry Dunant arrived in the small town of Solferino in 1859, he found himself in the middle of one of the bloodiest battles of the 19th century. Over 300,000 soldiers clashed in a single day of unimaginable violence. What he saw there would haunt him forever.
But instead of turning away, Dunant chose to act. His vision of neutral, impartial care for the wounded led to the creation of the International Committee of the Red Cross and the first Geneva Convention.
In this episode of Footnotes in History: Forgotten Stories, we dive into the real story behind the founding of the Red Cross—and the man whose compassion changed the world.
