A sudden, violent encounter is no place for complexity. This was Bruce Lee's whole point. Simple, direct and effective is what you need in a violent clash and that's what JKD is supposed to deliver. And it does. If it's taught and practiced correctly. The problem is that many of us add new things rather than work on mastering basic things. This is most evident with JKD's leading straight punch. Instead of being the backbone of the method, instead of being a strike feared by one and all...like the Muay Thai round kick, for example, it's basically unknown.
