Summary

Grand Central Station in New York City has two levels, but Charley believes there is a mysterious third level.
Charley discusses this with his psychiatrist friend Sam, who calls it a “waking-dream wish fulfilment” — an escape from the stress and insecurity of the modern world.
Charley often finds Grand Central confusing like a maze and has lost his way before.
One day, while wandering, he reaches an old-fashioned station that looks like the 1890s.
The place has gaslights, brass spittoons, old ticket counters, and people dressed in outdated clothes.
He sees a newspaper dated June 11, 1894, and realizes he needs old currency to buy tickets.
He wants to go to Galesburg with his wife Louisa, imagining it as a peaceful town.
He exchanges modern money for old bills but later cannot find the third level again.
Louisa becomes worried and asks him to stop searching for it.
Charley collects stamps (philately) and inherits first day covers from his grandfather.
One day, he finds a letter from Sam dated July 18, 1894, posted from Galesburg.
Sam writes that he has reached Galesburg and invites Charley and Louisa to join him.
Later, Charley learns that Sam had exchanged $800 for old currency, suggesting he may have actually found the third level.
