Chartres is a city in France, on the river Eure, prefecture (administrative center) of the Eure et Loire department. Located 96 km from Paris on the Beauce plain.
During the Gallic period, Chartres was the capital of the Carnutes tribe, and the city is named after them.
Chartres was destroyed almost to the ground during the raids of the Norman tribes and became the capital of the county from the tenth century.
Now it is the administrative center of the district of Beauce, known throughout the world for its magnificent Cathedral, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
It is considered to be the finest and best preserved Gothic cathedral in France and Europe, with the greatest architectural purity. Since 876, the Holy Shroud of the Virgin Mary has been kept in Chartres.
