In the busy and noisy streets of Manila, a special bond between a boy and his dog has blossomed.

11-year-old Rommel named his dog “Badji”, after his own brother whom he lost in the streets five years ago. Since the day Rommel found the dog in a dumpsite, the two have become inseparable in their struggle to survive life on their own. Every day, Rommel and Badji scour the streets and ride public buses to beg for money and food. The two protect each other like real partners – Rommel feeds and cares for the dog; the dog defends Rommel from street children who try to steal his money. At night, the two sleep in a dark alley, on a makeshift mat made of carton they scavenged from the streets.

Rommel’s family was abandoned by his father six years ago. His mother now lives with another man, and so the young boy has learned to fend for himself. He says Badji is not just a pet nor a friend, but his only family. The dog is the only one he’s got who’s never left his side.
