The human voice is widely accepted as the first known musical instrument in history. Fascinated by similar-sounding objects, people have attempted resynthesizing human voices since the 18th century. With the rise of electronic and digital signal processing, various tools and approaches have emerged, continually improving to the point of being indistinguishable from human speech.
Synphonetics considers itself a continuously expanding compositional process aimed at exploring different approaches to speech synthesis and manipulation in a SuperCollider live coding environment. While not only choosing systems that reproduce speech in the best possible quality, it is also about appreciating those with artifacts. A sonic environment is being created that moves at the border and transition between abstract electronic signals and recognizable human speech, to which humans have always been extremely sensitive.
