In this post, we will learn about the history of the temple of Sri Sailam Mallikarjuna, one of the Jyotirlinga sites, and the special features of the place.
Ithalam is also known by the names of Sriparvatham, Srinagar, Sri Giri and Sri Sailam.Srisailam Mallikarjunar Temple is the second Jyotirlinga site in the line of Jyotirlinga sites. Here Lord Shiva bestows blessings on the people. It is revered as the place where Nandi Deva appeared. It is here that Lord Nandi performed penance for Lord Shiva and received the power to carry the Lord. Adisankar worshiped here and wrote the book Sivananda Lakari at Italam.
This place is not only proud of being the Jyotirlinga but also one of the 51 Shakti Peethas of the Goddess. It is also revered as the shrine where Lord Ganesha married Siddhi and Buddhi. It is also a special place where songs are sung by Thevara trio like Uppar, Sundarar and Sambandar.
Located on Nallamalai Hill in Kurnool District of Andhra Pradesh This place is called Srisailam. Situated at an altitude of 1500 feet above sea level on the banks of the river Krishna, Lord Shiva is bestowed with the names of Lord Mallikarjunar and Lord Ambikayalaval, also known as Brahmavidyambika. Situated on the banks of the River Krishna, this temple is situated amidst lofty mountains and dense forest. May be here, The Brahmarambika Ambal Sannathi is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas where the neck of the Goddess is worshiped as the site of the fallen Shakti Peetha. The temple is located on the eastern side of the hill. The temple is specially set up with four walls and tower gates.

Chandraregupta, the daughter of Chandragupta, who ruled over Mallikapuri, used to worship the Lord with the jasmine flowers and Arjuna flowers found here. Thus the Lord here is called 'Mallikarjunar'.
From here the shrine of the Blessed Mother Brahmarambika is mentioned as the third Shakti Peetha of the 51 Shakti Peethas. Ithalam is also revered as the foremost of the eighteen Mahasakti Peethas of the Goddess.
A Maharishi named Siladhar performed penance for Lord Shiva for the blessing of a child. Lord Shiva had two sons, Nandi and Parvathan. The Sanagadhi sages came to see these children. They told some that Nandithevar would live on earth for some time. Some were very sorry. Knowing his father's grief, Nandi said, "Father! Don't worry. I will receive the saga boon from severe penance for Lord Shiva, '' he said. The place where Nandi Thevar performed penance is called 'Nandiyal' at the bottom of the hill and his brother Parvathi also received the gift of becoming a mountain without penance. Nandiyamperumane is a hill station here. From here Lord Shiva bestows blessings on him.

It is said that Ambika gave a sword to the Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji here. History has it that Shivaji defeated the Mughals with this heroic sword and established a strong empire. At this place everyone is allowed to go into the womb and worship the Swami. With the exception of other South Indian temples,
From here in Srisailam we can anoint ourselves to Mallikarjuna who gives blessings. Only after a 3 hour trek through the dense forest from the bottom of the hill can we reach Srisailam. Due to the dense forest cover, not all vehicles are allowed on the road from 8 pm to 6 am.
Crowds flock to the temple on Mondays and Fridays. 2 km to Srisailam peak. In the distance is the Ganesha Temple of Sakshi Ganapati. It is said that Lord Vishnu is seated in the image of Ganesha. This Ganapati is called a witness Ganapati because he gives a list to Lord Shiva in Kailasa (Srisailam) as to who among the devotees who see him are near to Moksha and who are not. So the devotees enter the entrance gate of Sri Sailam with devotion after worshiping the witness Ganapati, claiming the Dattam tribes, thinking that they should get Motsam.
With a pure mind and devotion, everyone can touch and worship the head of the Jyotirlinga, the source, irrespective of caste or religion.Lord Srimallikarjuna and Goddess Brahmarambika have been bestowing blessings on the devotees from all walks of life as devotees who bestow all kinds of pleasures on mere darshan.
