During my search of traditional songs
with a female perspective, I was repeatedly
pointed to this one in particular,
however, I’ve had a hard time
making sense of “I bitt, Herr Hauptmann”.
Its content didn’t seem to be
congruent with its musical form: Why
would you set such an urgent plea in
duple meter and to a sweet melody?
With all due respect for the unknown
authors – I felt the urge to write a new
arrangement to do the profundity of
the story justice.
