Internal derangement of TMJ is a disruption of the internal aspects of the TMJ, in which an abnormal relationship exists between the disc and the condyle, glenoid fossa and articular eminence. Trauma is the most common cause. Types of trauma can be macrotrauma, microtrauma and indirect trauma. Management of ID of TMJ involve conservative measures for stages I-III and surgical intervention for the latter stages. Medication and physiotherapy are quite helpful in relieve pain and increasing the range of motion of the joint. Other modes of management are Arthrocentesis, Arthroscopy, Disecectomy, Eminectomy, Condylar shave and ultimately total joint replacement.
