Smoke from a computer power supply?!? Well, that's cooked. How to test a power supply!

Tried to turn on one of my computers and it made a funny, but very bad squealing noise and started smoking! Obviously, it's bad. However, I'll show you how to test a power supply with nothing more than a jumper wire and a multimeter! Very basic tools are needed to test these. No special proprietary tools are required!

Of course, the power supply must be completely disconnected from the computer to prevent any damage to the machine or the components. You should never ever EVER open a computer power supply. There are large capacitors in there which can deliver a nasty shock! If you suspect that a power supply is faulty, use a power supply tester, take it to a computer repair shop, or replace it with a known good unit.
