Are the Ahl al-Kitab of today the same as those at the time of the Prophet?

It is sometimes heard in Muslim circles that the Jews and Christians of today are not the same as those referred to as "Ahl al-Kitab" in the Qur'an and teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The implication is that the duties Muslims have towards the Ahl al-Kitab and the rights and dignity conferred upon them no longer apply in our contemporary world. This video probes who the Ahl al-Kitab are, what their beliefs were in the 7th century vs. today, and whether the term is an enduring one or whether it expired in the early generations after the Prophet Muhammad's life.
