Prior to the presentation of the West Bengal Budget 2020-21, the state Cabinet had met under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and took major decisions to this effect. The Budget Session of the state had started on Friday with the address of the state Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar.
While presenting the West Bengal Budget 2020-21, state Finance Minister Amit Mitra introduced a new scheme called ‘Jai Johar’. Under this new scheme, people above 60 years of age who belong to Scheduled Tribe community and are not covered under any other pension scheme, will be given a monthly pension of Rs 1000.
The state finance minister also introduced another scheme called ‘Bandhu Prakalpa’. Under this novel scheme, people above 60 years of age, who belong to Scheduled Caste community and are not covered under any other pension scheme, will be given a monthly pension of Rs 1000.
Bringing relief to farmers of tea gardens, the state government proposed to waive the Agricultural Income Tax to the tea gardens for the next two financial years 2020-21 and 2021-22.
The state government has also announced free electricity for consumers with quarterly consumption up to 75 units.
On February 3, West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar had said the state budget session for 2020-21 will commence from February 7. State secretariat sources had also said that state cabinet has decided to table the budget on February 10.
