Sammy “The Bull” Gravano — the man who would rise to become underboss of the Gambino crime family, and one of the most infamous mob informants in history.
Before standing beside John Gotti, and long before breaking his oath of omertà, Sammy found himself enrolled… in hairdressing school.
It was an odd choice for an up-and-coming mobster, but as Sammy later said, it was an easy way to make some quick cash — and meet women.
But his time there didn’t last long.
One day, Sammy was assigned to dye a woman’s hair. He’d never done it before, so he asked for help. The instructor told him to “just apply the mixture.” So, that’s exactly what he did — the entire bottle.
After a few minutes, chaos erupted. The woman’s hair turned bright blue.
Sammy was stunned — the lady was screaming, furious, demanding to know what he’d done to her hair.
Sammy ran to the manager, who quickly realized the problem. He was only supposed to use a small amount of dye and mix it — instead; he’d dumped the whole bottle on her head. The result? The poor woman looked “like Marge Simpson.”
The manager told Sammy it was his responsibility to fix the disaster.
Sammy’s response? He told the manager to deal with it — he was going to lunch.
And with that, he walked out.
When he returned a few hours later, the school was in chaos. A senior stylist had managed to tone down the blue, but only after promising the woman a string of free haircuts.
Sammy realized then and there… the hairdressing life wasn’t for him.
