Two NATO members prepare country's population for war with Russia due to Putin's aggressive policy

Putin's aggressive foreign policy has forced the governments of Finland and Sweden to prepare their populations for a possible future confrontation with the Russian Federation. Thus, the Finnish Ministry of Internal Affairs recently launched a new resource that should prepare the country's citizens for possible crisis or military situations, Bloomberg reports. The resource explains how to act in the event of a power outage, internet outages, and banking service interruptions. The Director General of the Finnish Interior Ministry's Rescue Service, Kimmo Kohvakka, said that the country's citizens must be prepared for anything given the current situation in Europe. Finland shares a 1,340-kilometre border with Russia, and Helsinki has maintained a higher level of preparedness. But after Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, Helsinki announced plans to build a 200-kilometer border fence with Russia. The country last year closed its eight border crossings with Russia, following an influx of migrants, which Helsinki claimed was a hybrid attack orchestrated by Moscow.

Meanwhile, the Swedish government announced that it would be sending out a new brochure, "In Case of Crisis or War," by mail. The brochure is also available in electronic form. The Swedish Emergency Management Agency said it issued the brochure because there is currently a war going on in the "immediate vicinity" of the country, which is why Sweden had to join NATO. If in the future someone attacks the country, then every Swedish citizen is obliged to defend not only independence, but also democracy.
“The security situation is serious and we all need to strengthen our resilience to face various crises and ultimately war,” said Mikael Frisell, the director of the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency, which sent out the brochures.

Since the start of the war in Ukraine, Stockholm has repeatedly urged Swedes to prepare both mentally and logistically for the possibility of an armed conflict.

After the end of the Cold War, the country drastically slashed its defense spending as it focused its military efforts on international peacekeeping missions.

But it reversed course following Russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea.

Since then, Stockholm has reintroduced limited conscription, massively increased defense spending, and reopened a garrison on the Baltic Sea island of Gotland.

It subsequently strengthened bomb shelters, shored up drinking water supplies and transport infrastructure, appointed a minister of civil defense, and established a Psychological Defence Agency aimed at combatting disinformation.
