South Korea’s Gyodong Island is where many North Korean refugees keep memories of their homeland alive. Separated from families they left behind, they are unable to make visits to the graves of relatives who have died. Instead, they conduct ceremonies at a makeshift altar during the autumn harvest festival Chuseok. Their sense of longing echoes in a local shop that specialises in northern delicacies, where the sound of old Korean songs can be heard by the “people with broken hearts”.
