Race participants make use of traditional navigational skills like using a compass to find checkpoints. There are sections of the course where kayaking and riding bicycles will be utilized.

The Shawnee Mission Park Adventure Race is one of the most family friendly race events in the Kansas City area. There is a two hour race option for beginners that involves hiking through paved and unpaved trails in the park. The six hour race is also offered for more adventurous participants that will hike, bike, and kayak through various terrain on their journey to collect all of the checkpoints.
