Confucianism is a system of ethics formulated by Confucius, born in 551 BC, which is outlined in The Analects.

Confucian thought is concerned with human relations and the cultivation of the self.

Emphasis is placed on the virtue of ren, which is humanity and benevolence, and is significant in Confucianism.

According to Heywood, Confucianism emphasises that individuals should cultivate themselves morally through learning, reflection and through that self-improvement they can contribute to society as a whole.

The idea of the “superior person” or virtuous character, the junzi, is central in that system as someone who has undergone moral cultivation and serves as a model.

Confucian thought implies that education is important, and that through learning one can develop one’s moral potential.

In East Asian societies influenced by Confucian values, the emphasis is on collective harmony and social duty in contrast with Western-style individualism.
