A cut-off upper low had been sat around the Bay of Biscay for a couple of days bringing rain and some thunderstorms to the south of England and Wales. On the evening and night of the 7th/8th the low was moving into the south of England. Colder air moving in on top of a warm, humid airmass that was in place was set to lead to thunderstorms breaking out in the southeast during the night and pushing northwards and westwards across London and surrounding counties.
