Brazilian spinach (Alternanthera sissoo) is an extremely nutrient-rich leafy vegetable plant species native to Brazil and South America. It packs high amounts of carotenoids, vitamin C, vitamin K, folic acid, iron, and calcium. Another most important matter of consideration is of growing Brazilian spinach is very easy and convenient. This plant belongs to the Amaranthaceae family, which is now popularly growing in Malaysia. This vegetable is also known as the "Poor Man’s Spinach", Sissoo spinach, Sambu and Samba lettuce.
Growing of Brazilian spinach is very easy just collect some cuttings (about 6 to 8 cm), remove/trim all leaves and extra branches and transplant into soils/media (any garden soil is okay), apply irrigation then wait and see; within one week you can see initiation of new branches and by 4 weeks you can start first harvesting (please harvest before flower initiation). You can continue harvesting many times. For better growth and yield after 2-3 harvests add some organic matter and a minimum of NPK compound if necessary. Irrigate just if looks very dry otherwise no need. Insect/disease attack is almost zero but you see try to manage manually first then try bio-pesticide. If mealybug or aphid attack is observed just spray detergent solution (mix with water only).
