Dozens of people gathered at the El Saler beach in Valencia, Spain on Friday to observe the century's longest total lunar eclipse and the "blood moon".

A total lunar eclipse occurs when the moon and the sun are on exact opposite sides of the Earth. The one witnessed on Friday had a duration of 102 minutes and was visible throughout Spain until 23:13 the same day.

Although the moon was in Earth's shadow, some sunlight passed through Earth's atmosphere and reached the moon. As most of the longer blue and violet wavelengths were filtered out by Earth's atmosphere and the shorter red and orange wavelengths passed through, the moon took on a reddish tint, known as a "blood moon."

The observations in Spain on Friday night not only focused on the Moon, but also other planets in the solar system such as Jupiter, Saturn and Mars. Mars happened to be in the closest position to Earth in 15 years during the total lunar eclipse, offering another thrilling astronomical event for stargazers. http://www.cctvplus.com/news/20180728...
