Kalamba Lake || Old water supply system, Kolhapur :

Koutilya told that, the state which remains increasingly dependent on irrigation instead of unpredictable of rains for agricultural production is more prone to prosperity.
Kolhapur is a ‘City of Lakes’.
There were about 24 lakes in and around this city.
These lakes were having religious, cultural, medicinal importance.
Now only few of them are present.
Kalamba Talav or Kalamba lake is one of those lakes.
This lake was constructed by Chatrapati Shau Maharaj .
It was constructed in the year between 1881 and 1883 on the southern side of city.
The lake was developed by building a bund between the two ridges,
and impounding the water of Katyayani valley.
It covers about 63.13 hectares of area.
Kalamba is an earthen dam about 4,300-ft long and 27-ft depth.
Kalamba has potential to sustain the biodiversity.
It attracts many migratory birds.
It is also used for fishing.
There are about 11 varieties of fishes found in the Kalamba Lake.
Kalamba Talav has an open air gymnasium, a jogging track and a park.
During monsoon people visit to watch and enjoy the water overflowing from the lake.
You can have a nice picnic to this place anytime throughout the year.

Relax, enjoy and have fun.
With the help of natural gradient, water from Kalamba was brought to the city through stone channels.This water was stored in big tank with the capacity of 17 lakh litre. This system is known as ‘Panyacha Khajina’. From here the water was supplied to other 36 tanks built in different parts of the city. This system is more than 125 years old.
At present this water supply system in not in use.
But still,we can see the remains of this 125-year-old pipeline from Kalamba to various places in the city .
This can be seen as an environmental heritage of the city.
