In this video we discuss apophenia and how it affects people's perception of data and humans. Apophenia is the medical condition of seeing patterns in data that do not exist. Although it was first noticed in schizophrenics, regular people without mental illnesses see patterns in data and make decisions based on them. We do the same with humans, making conclusions based on a few select data points, anecdotes, and moments of behavior. I caught myself having done it toward my own mother, distorting her image in my mind. Apophenia affects our decision-making with colleagues, family members, strangers and employees, which leads to problems. Our conclusions, whether positive or negative, affect our trust, willingness, and opportunities for that individual. Of course, we do it unconsciously, and the other person is unaware of our judgement. It's very useful to stay aware of the tendency to draw conclusions and take the time to gather more data before making decisions.
