STORYLINE
A group of miners at platinum producer Lonmin's Marikana mine staged a protest on Tuesday near the hillside where 34 of their colleagues were shot and killed by South African police in August last year.
Protesters sang and danced on a street near the hillside, some of them holding tree branches and clubs.
Tensions have been high after the killing this weekend of an organiser from one of two rival unions.
The strike has re-ignited fears that there could be a reprisal of the violence that hit the industry last year.
Lonmin officials have confirmed that all 13 of their shafts remain "not operational".
Some 46 people were killed during a six-week period of violent strikes at Lonmin's platinum mine last year in Marikana, northwest of Johannesburg, when miners demanded higher wages.
In the most shocking incident, police fired into a crowd of striking miners near the Marikana mine on August 16, killing 34 people.
Lonmin, whose shares are listed in London and Johannesburg, is the world's third-biggest platinum producer.
