INCLUSIVE MOBILITY INDEX (IMI) FOR OLDER ADULTS IN PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS

The rapid growth of the ageing population in Malaysia underscores the urgent need for inclusive and accessible public transport systems. Older adults often encounter barriers such as inadequate seating, poor signage, limited accessibility features, and insufficient safety measures, all of which reduce their independence and mobility. Despite these challenges, there is currently no standardized method for evaluating elderly-friendly transport facilities. To address this gap, this project aims to identify the existing public transport facilities in Subang Jaya for older adults' mobility and to develop the Inclusive Mobility Index (IMI) as a standardized tool for evaluating inclusiveness in public transport systems. The IMI provides policymakers and operators with measurable evidence to identify gaps, prioritize improvements, and monitor progress. Beyond policy applications, the index promotes equity in mobility, empowers elderly users, and supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 3, SDG 9, and SDG 11) by fostering safer, more inclusive, and age-friendly transport systems.
