This Black documentary brings you unknown Black history facts not taught in school-not only during Black History Month, but all year round. It’s about how real people made a way for themselves and their communities through ownership, even when the odds were stacked against them.

Biddy Mason turned her freedom into opportunity by buying land in Los Angeles. She didn’t just stop at one property-she kept investing and growing her estate, which ended up being worth about $300,000 by the time she died in 1891 (that’s millions today). Her story shows how ownership can change a family’s future and help build up a whole community.

Benjamin Montgomery made history after the Civil War by buying the Davis Bend plantation for $300,000. He managed thousands of acres and ran a general store, proving that land ownership could lead to real economic power. Montgomery’s success is a reminder that owning land isn’t just about wealth-it’s about having control and making your own path.

C.R. Patterson found his way through business ownership. He started the only Black-owned car manufacturing company in America, building carriages and later automobiles in Ohio. For Patterson, ownership meant creating jobs, building something new, and showing that Black excellence isn’t limited to just one field.

Jean Baptiste Point du Sable literally laid the groundwork for Chicago. He owned a trading post and homestead right where the city now stands, and sold it for $1,200 in 1800-a big deal back then. His story is proof that Black ownership has been shaping America from the very beginning, even if it’s not always mentioned in school.

These stories matter because ownership is more than just having property or a business-it’s about making a way for yourself and opening doors for others. That’s a lesson from Black history that’s important every day, not only during Black History Month.
