Years ago I watched a very long video of a train winding it's way on the coastal track in Norway, through fjords and tunnels through the mountains. Already back then I knew that I wanted to create something similar with my craft: Blacksmithing.

This is my first ever attempt at it, and I would be grateful for any feedback on it, I am still learning my way around editing, microphones and equipment, and simultaneously trying to focus on making intricate little forged things. The length is just over 20 minutes, as I wasn't sure how much my CPU can take.

When people imagine a blacksmith and what a blacksmith does, they don't imagine someone like me... a small, roundish, Finnish woman forging iron and silver practically on a miniature scale with over 20 years of experience. The other idea is that blacksmithing is loud, so it would be weird to have a soothing and relaxing blacksmithing video. It is true, there can be power tools especially in the normal large scale work. In my small scale there is very little. I will spare you from those bits in these videos, unless requested. I try and avoid using power tools in my work, as I prefer the slower pace and silence much better than the noise of angle grinders and welding machines. I happily let my husband do the parts that require a power hammer.

I wanted to share with you part of my day this windy week in August. I had the forge to myself and was testing some old microphones. After my tests I just let the camera roll, and eventually tried different positions for it.... and might have gotten a bit creative towards the end!

In the video I am tapering out the handle on some forged iron Thor's hammer pendants. I work iron in batches of three, which is why if you don't look carefully it will look like you are seeing the same thing twice or thrice. Earlier on I had a lot of taps on the microphone, which is why I didn't include those clips and you join me mid session. The Mjolnir are not completed in this video. I wanted the focus to be the experience, the journey... not the result.

I have to admit I enjoyed making this one a lot... even though my first rendering took 16 hours, because I accidentally had the project settings at 4K. I am afraid that was quite a challenge for my little laptop! One day I would like to be able to film in 4K. Then you would see every little detail, like the awesome walking in snow films that ‪@ScenesBySevy‬ does.

Lastly, I wanted to say that this isn't really a tutorial, though you might be able to pick up on some of my technique. I know quite a few of you will find yourself here because of wanting to learn. There are already some very good blacksmiths on YouTube for tutorials, so I wanted to do something different.
