Bombay High Court has ruled out that parents can take away their property given to a son if he ill-treats them or harass them. The Maintenance and Welfare of Senior Citizen Act, 2007 states that its a legal obligation of the children to look after their elderly parents and abandoning them is a criminal offence. The act also says that elderly parents can claim maintenance from their children and grandchildren upto Rs. 10,000. There is a provision for an agreement signed after 2007. A maintenance tribunal can cancel the agreement if the children misbehave with parents or refuse to take care of them.
