This male was quite obliging and stayed in place at a short distance several times, preening, foraging along the ground, as well as singing. I observed a couple of other males giving their flight songs from about 50 meters up. I believe these might be the first recordings made of this species engaging in these behaviors. I saw it this past weekend at Wadi Reema, a lovely wide wadi just north of Abha, the main city in the Asir Province in southwest Saudi Arabia. The Rufous-capped Lark, now considered a distinct species, having been separated from Blanford's and Erlanger's Lark, can only be see in southwest Saudi, western Yemen, and Somaliland. Given how much less tourist-friendly the latter two countries are (a major understatement!), Saudi Arabia is the easiest country in which to see these wonderful birds.
