Didn't think I'd get this so fast after taking up the grind for a second time but here we are. I guess I might as well answer some possible questions:
Isn't this way slower than your previous PB?
Yes. This category is Low%, so if you can get fewer items, it doesn't matter if you're slower.
How is Low% defined?
Low% is defined as it is for the MML1 speedrun.com leaderboards, which is inspired by the ruleset for the classic Mega Man games. Namely, you cannot use shops, cannot upgrade weapons, and seek to get as few items as possible. If glitches can be used to do so, we use them.
There isn't a concrete measure of percentage, so it's really just about item/weapon count.
Implicitly, since the game is timed by IGT, we also want a deathless run.
What items do you get?
There are items that you get from story progression or "obviously" need to progress:
• The blue, yellow, & red refractors
• The B- and A-class licenses
• The keys from the Sub-Gates & Sub-Cities
• The Jump Springs
The Citizen's Card is skipped due to Mine Skip.
We also get the Power Raiser, to enable Mine Skip, and the Powered Buster, for some Range and to break down the Clozer wall.
The previous route would get one additional Buster part (the Buster Unit) and a different weapon (the Grand Grenade).
Why the Powered Buster? Why not the Buster Unit?
The reason the old route worked is because the Buster Unit or like items were thought necessary to have sufficient Range to attack Balcon Gerat. As it turns out, no; the Buster at no Range can barely hit Balcon's arms.
So, if we can find a Special Weapon that can hit the cannons/laser on Balcon, and break down the wall in Clozer, we can save one item. The Powered Buster meets both criteria and is available sufficiently early. (Most people think the wall in Clozer requires the Grand Grenade, but the Active & Powered Busters can also break it.)
What makes this so difficult?
Balcon takes ages to beat with this setup, and thus can drain your boat's HP to near-zero before the end. Moreover, you only have 1 shot of lenience with the Powered Buster: you have to use 6-7 shots to kill the cannons, and all of the remaining ones need to be dedicated to the laser. Even then, explosions deal inconsistent damage, so even perfect execution can end in failure. Altogether Balcon is the biggest bottleneck; this was my second attempt past him.
Fokkerwolf is the next bottleneck. Aside from the Flutter's HP suffering the same problem as the boat (long battle, lots of damage), she can hit you directly. You might notice I got into "red bar" at the end (no HP blocks, red shield, which means any hit kills me).
What's with the pause spamming at certain points?
In Portal 1, we use this to enable a vertical damage boost called "Mine Skip". By swapping Buster Parts, we reset our invincibility frames, allowing for subsequent damage to be taken. This is one of the most inconsistent tricks in the run, but since I doubt many people will try this I don't mind taking my time in the interest of a less grueling grind.
Later on, this also resets Mega Man's animation, allowing for rapid fire of the Powered Buster.
Why do you run around so much in the late-game?
In Bruno and the Downtown Sub-City, I am a bit of a chicken, because this was the first run I got past Fokkerwolf and I didn't want to lose it. I would rather play it safe and have a slower successful run, than lose it. It doesn't help that Downtown Sub-City is one of the most difficult execution segments of the run even when you have a more pleasant weapon to use.
Why does Juno not damage you?
It's a glitch; pay attention to what I do at Data beforehand. An invincibility flag is set while Mega Man is invisible and talking to Data; exiting this state at the right time (as caused by the Foo-Roos exploding) prevents it from being un-set. (However, certain animations will still disable it. I wasn't sure off-hand if the Powered Buster would do that, so I refrained from using it in the interest of safety.)
Why Japanese?
Habit. (And I guess it's slightly faster between being able to kick Paprika and having fewer textboxes.)
