How does oatmeal affect blood sugar levels? Oatmeal can provide many health benefits, quick or "instant" oatmeal can significantly increase blood sugar levels. People struggling to maintain blood sugar levels must be careful when choosing what type of oatmeal to eat.

Avoid quick or instant oatmeal that are ready to go. Ingredients to avoid are dried fruits. They tend to be very high in sugar and can spike up blood sugars very quickly. Avoid adding honey, brown sugar or syrup because they will cause an elevation in blood sugar levels given their high sugar content.

Eating the proper oatmeal can be beneficial. Oatmeal can be high in fiber, therefore, regulate digestion and improve glycemic control. Choose an old fashioned oatmeal which tend to have more minerals and vitamins. Add water instead of milk and add plain greek yogurt for extra protein source.
