If any man come to me, and hate not
Luke 14:25 And there went great multitudes with him: and he turned, and said unto them,
Luke 14:26 If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.
McGarvey – Hateth, as used here, is an example of phenomenal speech, or speaking from appearances. In the cases supposed the person would appear to hate those whom he abandoned for Christ.
This is a common occurrence in our modern day. When people say you hate me, or hurl a false accusation against you (such as a bigot), they are upset that you have chosen your faith, your love for Christ over them. They would rather you accept their ungodly attitudes, lifestyles and reject Christ, and his teaching
The Greek word that is translated into HATETH is Misei (pronounced MY-SAY)
Cating – The word misei is not used in the sense of despise, detest, disrespect, or dislike. It is a Jewish expression that speaks of indifference to one and preference for another. Boles & Barnes say hate frequently means to love less.
Consider Gen 29:31, Leah was hated compared to Rachel. This does not mean that Jacob hated Leah, in the sense of hatred in the heart. He had 10 children with Leah! Rather, it means that he loved Rachel more. He preferred the company of Rachel over the company of Leah.
So, we understand that we must love others less than Jesus. We must love Jesus MORE that our family and friends. If we are not willing to love others less than Jesus, than we are not a true disciple of Jesus.
I expect that everyone of us have someone in our life who wants us to give up Jesus, the church and the gospel. There is something about Jesus or his gospel that they find offensive. It upsets them when we choose the way of Jesus regardless of what it will do to the friendship.
For example, I expect there are some here who have chosen Jesus’ church, over the religion of their fathers – the religion of their childhood. I daresay that there are those who obeyed the gospel against the behest of their husband or their wife. But you choose Christ.
You chose Jesus over them. You loved Jesus more than them.
You can only be a disciple if you are willing to choose Jesus over everything else. If you are unwilling to do so, you are no better than those that do not obey the gospel. These are not my words. This is not a dogma created by the church. These are the words of Jesus.
If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. If any man come to me, and DOES NOT LOVE LESS his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.
Luke 14:27 And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.
Luke 14:28 For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it? Luke 14:29 Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him, Luke 14:30 Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish.
Luke 14:31 Or what king, going to make war against another king, sitteth not down first, and consulteth whether he be able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand? Luke 14:32 Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an ambassage, and desireth conditions of peace. Luke 14:33 So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.
Counting the cost (as in the builder) and seeking counsel (as in the king) – show that a would-be follower of Jesus should consider the possible consequences of obeying the gospel. They should not act until they are willing to put Christ first above ALL.
Matt 22:37 Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
1 John 2:15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
Luke 16:13 No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Luke 14:34 Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be seasoned? Luke 14:35 It is neither fit for the land, nor yet for the dunghill; but men cast it out. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
Matt 19:29 And every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name's sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall inherit everlasting life.
