Down in the Lower Macleay Trail sits a small Stone House known as The Witch's Castle.

Back in the mid 1800's, a man by the name of Danford Balch, bought significant portion of land around Portland. The area was so big, he hired a man by the name of Mortimer Stump to help him clear up the area. Stump lived in a cabin that was on the property. He lived on the property with Stump's family of 10 and ended up falling for his daughter Anna.

Mortimer approached Balch to get his approval for Anna's hand to tie the knot in marriage. Balch was furious when he asked this and forbid him from marrying Anna. Anna and Mortimer ended up eloping, which means to secretly marry and run away. After they eloped, Danford became deeply depressed and relied on heavy alcohol consumption to help deal with the situation.

The young couple returned to Portland and Balch acted quickly upon learning this. He got his double barrel shotgun and shot Stump in the face onboard the Stark Street Ferry. He was arrested for the murder, but quickly escaped from his wooden jail cell and hid out on his property for 6 months before being reprehended again. This led to his execution and was the first legal execution in the state of Oregon. Balch claimed that his wife "Bewitched" into committing the murder.

The property was handed off to numerous people over the years. The Stone Structure was near the Balch homestead. It didn't erect until the1930's. It was maintained by Portland Parks and Recreation and was used as a Ranger Station and a bathroom. The Structure was destroyed in 1962 and was abandoned. It was left as ruins until high schoolers began hanging out in there in the 80's and gave it the name "The Witch's Castle", even though there was no connection to Witch's.

Legend has it, Balch and Stump are continuing their feud in the afterlife and haunt the castle along with Anna.
