This film clip is about the clash of the perceived moral and cultural rights of Aboriginal people to hunt and gather protected fish in amounts beyond what is legally acceptable in modern Australia. Traditionally minded Aboriginal people quite rightly should have the moral, ethical and legal right to collect native foods if they so wish to preserve their sense of their own culture and who they are. Similarly the Australian public and the institutions we entrust to protect and preserve our natural resources for future generations have the moral, ethical and legal right to protect fish and abalone from over-exploitation, even by Aboriginal people. This film clip explores one such clash of ideas by Yuin Aboriginal people and the NSW government department entrusted to manage fish stocks.
