Connecticut Gold Star Families Memorial Monument Information

The Berlin Veterans Commission is pleased to announce that the Woody Williams Foundation Connecticut Gold Star Families Memorial Monument is being built at the Berlin Veterans Memorial Park, 51 lower Ln, Berlin, CT 06037.

This monument honors, recognizes, and serves Gold Star Families and the legacy of their Loved Ones who have paid the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the Armed Forces of the United States of America.

The black granite monument features two sides. One side bears the words: Gold Star Families Memorial Monument, a tribute to Gold Star Families and Relatives who have sacrificed a Loved One for our Freedom.

The other side tells a story through the four granite panels: Homeland, Family, Patriot, and Sacrifice. The scenes on each panel reflect Connecticut’s Gold Star Families and their fallen
heroes.
At the center of this tribute is the most distinct feature of the monument, the cut out which represents the loved one who paid the ultimate sacrifice in the name of freedom.

The most compelling part of the cut out is when the sun goes behind the monument and the shadow hits it at a certain time of day, the image shines through, it’s like the loved one is with us. It is designed that way and represents all of those who died during their service.

We are collaborating with the Woody Williams Foundation to build this Gold Star Families Memorial Monument here in Connecticut. There are 87 monuments across the United States, and this will be the only one in Connecticut.

The Woody Williams Foundation is a charitable 501c(3) nonprofit organization that pursues specific endeavors and goals through the vision of Medal of Honor recipient Hershel "Woody" Williams. The Foundation encourages, with the assistance of the American public and community leaders, establishing permanent Gold Star Families Memorial Monuments in communities throughout the United States, conducting Gold Star Families Outreach across
the country, providing Living Legacy scholarships to eligible Gold Star Children, and
advocating for educational benefits for all Gold Star Family members.
