India has been a hub of kidney rackets for a long time. A decade ago, it was estimated that a fifth of the illegal kidney transplants in the world took place in India. These rackets are very elaborate and organised. The organisers of these rackets live lavish lifestyles while the poor who are usually targeted for donations are exploited the most. The reason why these rackets exist is because there is a huge shortfall of organ donations in India due to religious and emotional reasons. Because of this shortage patients have to rely on black market operations. But these could be eliminated if organ donations increase.
